“Film was something that I grew up with, I learned photography with it, was shooting with it when I started my business and continue to have fun with today. I no longer shoot film because I have to, or to prove anything to anyone. I do it because I enjoy it. Although my day to day revolves around digital photography, I try to make time when possible (which seems to be less and less) to get out and shoot a film camera and spend a little time in the darkroom. Most often these days when shooting film, it’s with a 4x5 field camera (view Camera), a HOLGA 120 or one of the pinhole cameras that I handcrafted myself.
For me, shooting with film is not just about the image, but also about the process and how I approach it. It allows me the ability to put my thoughts and focus in a different space. It forces me to think differently from my commercial work and digital photography, and I feel it helps me be more creative at times.” -Don Bensman Jr.
