It’s not every day I get to go into a foundry to capture their casting process… so when I do, it’s like Christmas! Yes, it’s hot… and yes, it’s dirty, but you have fire, molten steel and sparks. It’s pretty awesome.
For me, a project like this can be a little overstimulating. There are so many opportunities to get creative. The second I walk in the door, my brain is going 100mph. Straight away, everything you see starts looking like a prize winning photo in creativity, but it’s also important to stay on task. Regardless of what I start visualizing or how much fun I can have with the imagery, the Client still has needs. There’s a shot list that needs to be followed and goals that need to be met.
Even thought the opportunity to be creative is still there, I always need to keep in mind what’s important… what’s going to work for the Client, and what’s going to resonate with their target audience. Plant operations also need to be factored into the equation. For an operation like this, you just can’t sit there and do multiple takes. There is definitely a level of proper prior planning that needs to go into every shot.
Having a somewhat flexible shot list and plenty of open communication between myself and the Client (before and during the photo shoot), is really what helps pull the project all together. Getting an understanding of how their process works, where things would be at certain times and knowing what to expect, made it possible to have a successful outcome.
